First Week Posting

I love music, however, I cannot say that I have some sort of musical experience. When I was in high school I took a piano class and for me that was even more difficult that AP Physics class. My ethnic background is very rich in music, from Cumbias & Merengue to Conjunto Music I enjoy every single style. For me I don't need to be able to know all the technicalities involving music just as long as the sound of the music makes my spirit jump in joy. I am really looking forward to this class as we will be learning from sounds around the world. This is a opportunity that not many people have and I plan to take fully advantage of it. Music is a very important part of my life, it allows me to concentrate, reflect, and party (hehehe) I mean, what else can I ask from music? With this note I will end my blog and I will wait till next be able to reflect in the knowledge that I will gain about music around the world.

I see that you're not interested in learning the technicalities of music (at this point anyway). Would it destroy your pleasurable experience of the music? Or could knowledge enhance your experience (though not always in a happy way)?

Response to week three’s Blog

In regards to the two videos that were assigned I was able to easily find some common and different things about both performances. In the first video one can see that the performance was taking place in a setting that was prepared for the specific events. In contrast with the first video, the second video seemed to show that the performance took place in a more public area where more common people had access to it. In the first video we can tell that the original and elegant dancing is a reflection of the class that could be able to attend the performance. The tone of the music is very subtle and it sort of reflects classical music and which in today’s society sees as sign of higher social mobility. I feel that these differences gave us different perspectives in this style of music. I feel that the environment affected both of the performances, for example in the first video the performers seemed to be more serious than the ones performing in the street. I really enjoyed both videos but I have to say that I felt more connected to video number 2 because the rhythm caught my attention right away as it reminded me of some of the music from my peoples. I feel that I learned to see that this culture is very happy as it can be felt through the sound of their traditional music.
